    XLME interpolants, a seamless bridge between XFEM and enriched meshless methods

    In this paper, we develop a method based on local maximum entropy shape functions together with enrichment functions used in partition of unity methods to discretize problems in linear elastic fracture mechanics. We obtain improved accuracy relative to the standard extended finite element method at a comparable computational cost. In addition, we keep the advantages of the LME shape functions, such as smoothness and non-negativity. We show numerically that optimal convergence (same as in FEM) for energy norm and stress intensity factors can be obtained through the use of geometric (fixed area) enrichment with no special treatment of the nodes near the crack such as blending or shifting

    DejaVu: Intra-operative Simulation for Surgical Gesture Rehearsal

    International audienceAdvances in surgical simulation and surgical augmented reality have changed the way surgeons prepare for practice and conduct medical procedures. Despite considerable interest from surgeons, the use of simulation is still predominantly confined to pre-operative training of surgical tasks and the lack of robustness of surgical augmented reality means that it is seldom used for surgical guidance. In this paper, we present DejaVu, a novel surgical simulation approach for intra-operative surgical gesture rehearsal. With DejaVu we aim at bridging the gap between pre-operative surgical simulation and crucial but not yet robust intra-operative surgical augmented reality. By exploiting intra-operative images we produce a simulation that faithfully matches the actual procedure without visual discrepancies and with an underlying physical modelling that performs real-time deformation of organs and surrounding tissues, surgeons can interact with the targeted organs through grasping, pulling or cutting to immediately rehearse their next gesture. We present results on different in vivo surgical procedures and demonstrate the feasibility of practical use of our system

    Combined sticking: a new approach for finite-amplitude Coulomb frictional contact

    Engineering-level accuracy of discretization methods for frictional contact originates from precise representation of discontinuous frictional and normal interaction laws and precise discrete contact techniques. In terms of discontinuous behavior in the quasi-static case, two themes are of concern: the normal interaction (i.e. impact) and the jumps in tangential directions arising from high frictional values. In terms of normal behavior, we use a smoothed complementarity relation. For the tangential behavior, we propose a simple and effective algorithm, which is based a stick predictor followed by corrections to the tangential velocity. This allows problems with impact and stick-slip behavior to be solved with an implicit code based on Newton–Raphson iterations. Three worked examples are shown with comparisons with published results. An extension to node-to-face form in 3D is also presented

    The use of Artificial Neural Networks to estimate seismic damage and derive vulnerability functions for traditional masonry

    This paper discusses the adoption of Artificial Intelligence-based techniques to estimate seismic damage, not with the goal of replacing existing approaches, but as a mean to improve the precision of empirical methods. For such, damage data collected in the aftermath of the 1998 Azores earthquake (Portugal) is used to develop a comparative analysis between damage grades obtained resorting to a classic damage formulation and an innovative approach based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). The analysis is carried out on the basis of a vulnerability index computed with a hybrid seismic vulnerability assessment methodology, which is subsequently used as input to both approaches. The results obtained are then compared with real post-earthquake damage observation and critically discussed taking into account the level of adjustment achieved by each approach. Finally, a computer routine that uses the ANN as an approximation function is developed and applied to derive a new vulnerability curve expression. In general terms, the ANN developed in this study allowed to obtain much better approximations than those achieved with the original vulnerability approach, which has revealed to be quite non-conservative.     A parametric study on the dynamic response of planar multibody systems with multiple clearance joints

    A general methodology for dynamic modeling and analysis of multibody systems with multiple clearance joints is presented and discussed in this paper. The joint components that constitute a real joint are modeled as colliding bodies, being their behavior influenced by geometric and physical properties of the contacting surfaces. A continuous contact force model, based on the elastic Hertz theory together with a dissipative term, is used to evaluate the intra-joint contact forces. Furthermore, the incorporation of the friction phenomenon, based on the classical Coulomb’s friction law, is also discussed. The suitable contact-impact force models are embedded into the dynamics of multibody systems methodologies. An elementary mechanical system is used to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the presented approach, and to discuss the main assumptions and procedures adopted. Different test scenarios are considered with the purpose of performing a parametric study for quantifying the influence of the clearance size, input crank speed and number of clearance joints on the dynamic response of multibody systems with multiple clearance joints. Additionally, the total computation time consumed in each simulation is evaluated in order to test the computational accuracy and efficiency of the presented approach. From the main results obtained in this study, it can be drawn that clearance size and the operating conditions play a crucial role in predicting accurately the dynamic responses of multibody systems.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

    On the contact detection for contact-impact analysis in multibody systems

    One of the most important and complex parts of the simulation of multibody systems with contact-impact involves the detection of the precise instant of impact. In general, the periods of contact are very small and, therefore, the selection of the time step for the integration of the time derivatives of the state variables plays a crucial role in the dynamics of multibody systems. The conservative approach is to use very small time steps throughout the analysis. However, this solution is not efficient from the computational view point. When variable time step integration algorithms are used and the pre-impact dynamics does not involve high-frequencies the integration algorithms may use larger time steps and the contact between two surfaces may start with initial penetrations that are artificially high. This fact leads either to a stall of the integration algorithm or to contact forces that are physically impossible which, in turn, lead to post-impact dynamics that is unrelated to the physical problem. The main purpose of this work is to present a general and comprehensive approach to automatically adjust the time step, in variable time step integration algorithms, in the vicinity of contact of multibody systems. The proposed methodology ensures that for any impact in a multibody system the time step of the integration is such that any initial penetration is below any prescribed threshold. In the case of the start of contact, and after a time step is complete, the numerical error control of the selected integration algorithm is forced to handle the physical criteria to accept/reject time steps in equal terms with the numerical error control that it normally uses. The main features of this approach are the simplicity of its computational implementation, its good computational efficiency and its ability to deal with the transitions between non contact and contact situations in multibody dynamics.
